On an unseasonably cold Saturday in May – the kind where the sky spits hail at 10:30 in the morning and you need your winter coat just to keep out the chill – the Wee Weddings crew set up the ceremony chairs (thanks to Jesse at Black Pearl Party Tents) and hung stargazer lilies and sunflowers on the arbor…
This time hit different, both for us and for the brides. In spite of the pandemic, we kept planning, hoping vaccines would come, hoping restrictions would be lifted. We had been planning for months. We remained optimistic. It was our first wedding for more than 25 people – nearly triple! – at one of our favorite places, the West End Overlook. And for nearly all of us, being together that Saturday marked the end of a long stretch of isolation. It was the light at the end of the Squirrel Hill tunnel. For the brides, it was an important step on the path to sobriety, living deliberately, and reaching their full potential both as individuals and as partners.
The ceremony was intimate, tender, and filled with laughter and love. Kelly laminated her vows. Elaina “borrowed” a notebook from work to keep hers. To conclude the ceremony, we added a short reading about celebrating our individual identities, acknowledging the journey of becoming yourself, and then finally finding that special person who loves you for being you.
“People are like cities: We all have alleys and gardens and secret rooftops and places where daisies sprout between the sidewalk cracks, but most of the time all we let each other see is a postcard glimpse of a skyline or a polished square. Love lets you find those hidden places in another person, even the ones they didn’t know were there, even the ones they wouldn’t have thought to call beautiful themselves.” From Wild Awake by Hilary T. Smith.
Getting to know Kelly, Elaina, their friends and family has been a privilege and a joy we won’t soon forget.
Love. Never. Fails.
